Former South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan died on Tuesday at the age of 90 after suffering from chronic diseases.

According to Sputnik, Former he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells and died at his home in the South Korean capital, Seoul.

The former army general took office after a 1979 military coup following the assassination of then-President Park Chung-hee in 1979 and ruled the country until 1988.
