A Seoul court has sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to 30 years in prison after convicting him of treason in a case linked to alleged efforts to provoke a security crisis with North Korea.
The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of ordering drone incursions into North Korean territory in October 2024. Prosecutors argued the operation was intended to trigger military tensions and create a pretext for imposing martial law two months later.
A court spokesperson confirmed that Yoon received a 30-year prison sentence, matching the punishment sought by special prosecutors in April.
The ruling marks the latest development in a political scandal that has shaken South Korea, with prosecutors accusing the former president of exploiting national security tensions for domestic political purposes.
