On Friday, a Malaysian court acquitted former Prime Minister Najib Razak and the former chief executive of scandal-linked state fund 1MDB of corruption charges linked to a 2016 government audit into the fund, their lawyers said.

Najib is serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted in a separate case. In 2018, authorities charged him with abusing his position as prime minister in connection with amending a government review of the state investment fund after a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal.

The authorities have accused Arul Kandasamy, the former chief executive of the fund, of abetting and colluding with Najib.

Their lawyers told reporters on Friday that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the legal argument against them.

"The court found that there was no element of corruption whatsoever in Najib's role in these charges," said Shafei Abdullah, Najib's lawyer.

Najib faces three other cases related to corruption in the fund and other government entities.
