Former Israeli Negotiator: Tel Aviv Suffers 'Thought Malfunction' in Post-War Scenarios

A former Israeli negotiator and the head of the American Center for Middle East Research, Daniel Levy, attacked the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, asserting that Tel Aviv's leaders suffer from a "thought malfunction" regarding post-war scenarios in Gaza.

In an article in the American "New York Times," Levy stated that the Israeli government's declared objective of destroying the factions "denies the reality and history of these movements," pointing out that comparing them to ISIS is an illogical proposition that contradicts reality.

The author noted that after the devastating loss Israel suffered on October 7th, with more than 1,400 civilians and soldiers, the number of Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza has now become staggering.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 10,300 Palestinians have been martyred since the beginning of the war, including over 4,100 children.

The situation is rapidly deteriorating in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where at least 155 Palestinians have been martyred, and more than 2,150 others have been arrested, while Israeli political leaders and settlers have issued threats of ethnic cleansing.

In the north, the writer adds, the relatively calculated daily exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah could escalate into a comprehensive conflict at any day, potentially affecting a large part of Lebanon and Israel.

The intense American military deployment in the region might be framed as preventative, but it also indicates to the Israeli leaders the possibility of dragging America into this war—a risky addition to the calculations of misjudgment and unpredictability everywhere.

The writer considers that the broader regional fire has already begun, and the question is how much worse it will get.
