Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on charges of lying to the United States Congress, in a case that revives long-standing political battles surrounding the 2016 presidential election and the Russia investigation.

The indictment follows calls from former President Donald Trump, who has consistently pressed his allies to pursue legal action against figures he regards as political opponents.

Comey is now the first high-ranking former government official to face prosecution directly tied to the Russia probe, an inquiry that confirmed Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election but has been repeatedly dismissed by Trump as illegitimate.

The case has raised alarm among legal experts who argue that the Department of Justice under Attorney General Pam Bondi is being used as a political instrument, blurring the traditional boundary between independent judicial processes and partisan influence.

Trump welcomed the indictment as a victory for accountability. Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel, both longstanding critics of the Russia investigation, issued statements reinforcing that outcome.

Comey, in turn, has denied the charges and expressed confidence in the federal judicial system, insisting on his innocence and readiness to face trial.

Dismissed from his position during Trump’s first year in office, Comey has remained a central figure in partisan conflicts, with Trump and his supporters consistently targeting him over the Russia inquiry.
