Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has been led by Khaleda Zia since 1984, announced the death of the former Prime Minister (PM) at the age of 80, who was widely expected to achieve a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections scheduled for February.
The party stated in a press release reported by Radio France Internationale on Tuesday that the party leader and former Prime Minister, the national leader Khaleda Zia, passed away today at 6:00 AM local time.
Zia was the first woman to lead Bangladesh in 1991 and served as Prime Minister (PM) three times from 1991 to 1996, then for three months in 1996, and finally from 2001 to 2006.
She had been suffering from worsening health problems, including a chest infection, and was admitted to the hospital in November 2025 before her passing.
