Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates, met today, Wednesday, with Dr. Tshilidzi Marwala, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo.
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty extended his congratulations to the United Nations University on the fiftieth anniversary of its founding in 2025, expressing appreciation for the significant role the university plays in supporting the implementation of the UN system's development agenda and praising its contributions to addressing emerging issues, chief among them artificial intelligence.
FM also welcomed the upcoming visit of the United Nations University Rector to Egypt in the near future to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the university.
Moreover, he expressed Egypt's anticipation to boost partnership with the university across all fields, particularly regarding artificial intelligence governance, noting the steps Egypt has taken to advance the use of artificial intelligence, which include establishing the National Council for Artificial Intelligence in 2019, launching the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, and issuing the Responsible AI Charter.
Furthermore, Abdelatty expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the university on climate-related issues, pointing to the role played by the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding in this file since the launch of the Climate Responses for Sustaining Peace initiative during the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Concluding the meeting, FM extended an invitation to the United Nations University Rector to participate in the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development, which is scheduled to take place in November 2026 in the city of Aswan, highlighting it as an important platform for dialogue and exchanging views on various regional and international priority issues.
