A telephone call took place today, Sunday, between Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, and Annette Weber, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, to discuss regional developments and support security, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa.
The conversation addressed the ongoing preparations for the Berlin Ministerial Conference on Sudan scheduled for April 15, where Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of preserving Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity while supporting its national institutions and rejecting the creation of any parallel entities.
Moreover, he stressed the importance of launching a purely Sudanese-owned political process to end the conflict and reaching a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step toward a sustainable ceasefire to allow aid delivery and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Furthermore, FM condemned all violations against civilians as flagrant breaches of international humanitarian law and underscored the need to protect both civilians and infrastructure.
In the same context, both sides affirmed the importance of intensifying coordination and cooperation to achieve security and stability in the Horn of Africa given the significant regional tensions, while highlighting the need to support national state institutions.
Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia and continuing capacity-building efforts to establish security and stability, particularly in facing the challenges of terrorism and extremism.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of mobilizing adequate and sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia to enable it to carry out its duties effectively.
