FM, EPP Leader Hold Talks in Cairo

Dr. Badr Abdel Atty, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, met on Monday with Manfred Weber, leader of European People’s Party in the European Parliament, to discuss evolving relationship between Egypt and European Union (EU), following the elevation of relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khalaf stated that Abdel Atty praised the upward trend in Egypt-EU relations since the visit of the European Commission President to Cairo on March 17, 2024, and the announcement of the partnership upgrade. Abdel Atty affirmed Egypt’s commitment to implementing all pillars of this partnership and welcomed the European People's Party’s support for strengthening joint cooperation with Egypt.

Abdel Atty also emphasized Egypt's continuation of its economic reform program despite regional and global challenges that have impacted economies across the region, including Egypt. He outlined recent government measures to support foreign direct investment in Egypt, remove obstacles for investors, and improve the business climate to achieve economic reform objectives.

The discussion included Egypt-EU cooperation on migration, emphasizing a comprehensive approach linking migration to development and addressing root causes of irregular migration. Abdel Atty highlighted Egypt’s successes in halting waves of irregular migration to Europe, as well as the challenges and burdens involved. 

He also addressed counter-terrorism efforts, particularly the ideological aspect and the fight against extremist discourse, sharing Egypt's holistic approach that addresses the economic, social, and ideological dimensions of terrorism.

On regional developments, FM discussed Egypt’s efforts to reduce escalation in the region and to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, along with ensuring humanitarian aid access.

Moreover, he underscored the importance of EU support for the Palestinian Authority and emphasized the critical role of UNRWA in assisting Palestinian refugees.
