Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Monday Egypt eyes purchasing Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, hoping that Egypt will avoid the second wave of the pandemic.

In an interview with Russia-24 news channel, Shoukry pointed out that the country managed to overcome the first wave without a full lockdown, a matter which prevented negative economic impacts.

The Egyptian economic growth, compared with other countries, is healthy, but not at the speed it was previously, Shoukry noted.

The foreign minister said that Cairo keeps in touch with the medical authorities in Russia to buy its vaccine after the completion of the clinical trials.

"Egypt is keen on producing the Russian vaccine also on its lands," he stated, pointing to the country's great industrial capabilities in producing pharmaceutics.

It is worth noting that the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) signed on September 30 a deal with Egyptian pharmaceutical company Pharco to supply 25 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine that will be used to treat Covid-19 to Egypt.
