FM Advocates for Water Rights, Red Sea Sovereignty at AU Summit

​During his meetings with African Union leaders, Prime Ministers, and Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the AU Summit held in Addis Ababa (February 14–15), Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, emphasized that water is a fundamental human right.

​He underscored that access to clean drinking water is an indispensable human and social necessity.

FM highlighted that the adoption of the "Africa Water Vision and Policy 2063" at the AU Assembly level marks a significant step forward in safeguarding water rights. This vision reinforces the commitment to international law, specifically the principles of consensus, cooperation, and the obligation to avoid causing significant harm regarding projects on shared and transboundary rivers.

​Regarding maritime security, Minister Abdelatty asserted that governance of the Red Sea must be exclusive to its littoral states.

He expressed Egypt’s categorical rejection of any attempts by external parties to impose themselves as partners in the Red Sea governance framework.

​He further noted that active efforts are underway to activate the Council of Arab and African States Bordering the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Foster cooperation among member states to achieve sustainable development and Consolidate security and stability across the region.
