Ron DeSantis has signed a controversial new law granting sweeping authority to state officials in Florida to designate certain groups as terrorist organizations and impose strict penalties on those who support them.

The legislation, signed Monday, empowers the governor, the state government, and law enforcement leadership to classify any organization they determine to be involved in extremist activities as a terrorist entity.

Once designated, such groups can be forcibly dissolved, and any state funding allocated to them can be frozen.

The law also introduces significant consequences for students, allowing educational institutions to expel individuals found to be promoting or supporting designated terrorist organizations, whether domestic or foreign.

Supporters argue the measure strengthens public safety and provides tools to combat extremism at the state level. Critics, however, have raised concerns about potential overreach and the implications for civil liberties, particularly regarding freedom of expression.
