The ancient city of Hoi An in Vietnam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was submerged on Wednesday after heavy rains inundated thousands of homes and closed highways.

According to images shared by official media, residents navigated the flooded streets in boats, while houses and cars were partially submerged.

A resident of Hoi An stated, "The water flooded the city everywhere, and its level rose rapidly since Tuesday night," adding that the city had lost electricity.

Heavy rains have been falling in several provinces along Vietnam's coast since Monday.

On Wednesday, authorities announced that more than two thousand people had evacuated their homes in Quang Tri province in central Vietnam, where three people were reported missing.

Some sections of the national highway connecting northern and southern Vietnam were also closed due to landslides caused by the floods.

Natural disasters, especially floods and landslides, have resulted in the deaths or disappearances of 136 people in Vietnam since the beginning of the year.

Scientists suggest that extreme weather events have become more severe due to climate change.
