5 People Killed in Stampede during Concert in Algeria

Algerian sources at a local hospital said that at least five people were killed in a stampede that occurred during a concert of rapper Abdel Raouf Draghi concert in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria.

More than 20,000 fans gathered at 20th of August Stadium to follow rapper Soolking’s concert according to “Algeri 1” news website.

Hundreds of people could not enter into the stadium due to thick crowd inside.

Another news websites, citing hospital sources, said that  five people were killed in the  stampede, three boys and two girls along with 23 people were among the injured.

The websites said the stampede took place in front of one of the entrances to the stadium.

A state prosecutor headed to hospitals where the dead were kept at morgue to attend the autopsy before permitting interment.

Teams of the Algerian state prosecutor are still probing the bloody incident to define the real reasons of it.

Social media quoted a number of people who were at the scene.

They said that the stampede occurred around 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 GMT) an hour before the start of the concert that took place naturally.

They added that the stadium was full meanwhile, a number of people who bought cards were stuck outside.

Four people who were inside the stadium, when the stampede occurred, said that they did not notice anything abnormal and did not know anything about this stampede.

When they left the stadium at the end of the concert around midnight they did not see an ambulance crew.

Demonstrators in Algeria often chant the song "Freedom", which Algerian rapper, who resides in France, dedicated to demonstrators.

The song was released in March this year, less than a month after the outset  of major demonstrations on February 22 against the toppled President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has since resigned; Algerians are still protesting against the current  regime.
