At least five civilians were killed and several others injured on Monday following heavy artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting residential areas in Omdurman.
The Sudan Doctors Network issued an urgent statement confirming that the shelling struck several neighborhoods, causing significant damage to private homes and infrastructure. The network described the attack as a "continuation of the systematic targeting of innocent civilians" in the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Medical Crisis in Omdurman Local hospitals in Omdurman are reportedly struggling to cope with the influx of wounded individuals. Medical sources indicate that some of the injured are in critical condition, and the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue. The Sudan Doctors Network has renewed its call for the protection of medical facilities and the establishment of safe corridors for humanitarian aid.
Rising Civilian Casualties Omdurman, part of the greater Khartoum metropolitan area, has remained a primary front in the Sudanese civil war. Residents in the targeted areas reported that the shelling began early in the day, catching many families inside their homes.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the use of heavy weaponry in densely populated urban centers, which has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths since the war broke out in April 2023. The Sudan Doctors Network emphasized that these attacks constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and urged the international community to take decisive action to protect the Sudanese people.
