First Woman Elected as President of Hungary

The Hungarian parliament elected Katalin Novák, the Minister for Family, Youth, and International Relations, and became the first woman as a president of Hungary.

On Thursday, the Hungarian National Assembly at a meeting held, elected Minister Katalin Novák as the new president for the country. She was also the Deputy Head of the Ruling Party “Fidesz” led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

137 out of 199 deputies voted for her. The voting process was broadcasted on the air on the Hungarian channel M1.

Novák, 44 competed in the election with Peter Rona, the 80-year-old economist, a candidate from the opposition coalition.

The president of Hungary is elected by the National Assembly for a term of five years. János Áder has held this position since 2012.
