The number of fireworks-related injuries has risen to 140 as of Dec. 30, the Philippine Department of Health said Wednesday, according to ABS-CBN News.
The data, recorded Dec. 21 to Dec. 30, is 23 percent lower than last year’s 182 cases in the same time period, according to DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo.
Among the primary causes are 5 Star, Boga, "unknown" — or patients unaware of what hit them — Kwitis, unlabeled or imported, Pla-pla and Whistle bomb.
Boys aged five to 19 comprise the majority of the patients.
Domingo said the agency will continue its monitoring until Jan. 5, anticipating the largest number of cases this evening and tomorrow morning covering the transition to the new year.
The spokesperson once again reminded parents not to let children light firecrackers.
He said: “Ang bata, hindi dapat humahawak ng paputok, legal man o ilegal.”
He said the agency also supports the pursuit of any law restricting children’s access to firecrackers.
