Greek media outlets recently captured and circulated video footage of a firefighting aircraft plummeting from the sky during wildfire combat operations on the island of Rhodes, with two pilots reportedly on board. This incident underscores the ongoing severe weather conditions, particularly strong winds, exacerbating the fight against the wildfires engulfing the island.
Following the aircraft crash, substantial police and firefighting units rushed to the scene. Initial reports confirm the aircraft to be Greek-operated, carrying two pilots, although as of now, no injuries or fatalities have been announced.
Authorities in Greece continue to grapple with escalating wildfires, as temperature levels persistently rise. These wildfires, which ignited last week, show no signs of abating, despite the intensive deployment of firefighting aircraft.
Rhodes continues to bear the brunt of the uncontrollable blazes, leading to ongoing evacuation processes and assistance from neighboring countries. While these fires rage on, Greece, under adverse weather conditions, faces a tireless and ceaseless battle against the inferno.
Parallel to these efforts, the Piraeus Municipal Youth Council is assembling first aid materials for firefighters, nurses, and volunteers battling the wildfires. These resources, collected in collaboration with the Greek organization, Humaniti, will be dispatched to the affected regions.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promptly mobilized, coordinating all necessary actions to manage the crisis generated by the wildfires in Rhodes, as per diplomatic sources.
These sources further indicated that, thanks to the considerable mobilization of the State apparatus and the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 19,000 people, many of them foreign nationals, were smoothly and safely evacuated. This represents the largest evacuation operation involving foreign nationals from a single point in Greece.
Diplomatic sources reported that officials have so far handled over 2,500 calls from foreign nationals offering assistance. Their requests mostly involve facilitating communication with their respective embassies, their relocation to accommodation facilities, and providing information on exiting Rhodes. Democratic Change Movement officials are addressing questions about the replacement of lost travel documents and providing updates on the prevailing conditions in Rhodes.
