Northern Ireland Police are investigating an incident where a firebomb was thrown at a mosque in Newtownards, east of Belfast, early Saturday morning.

The police reported the incident as racially motivated, according to the British news agency PA Media. The attack occurred around 1 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), during which graffiti was also sprayed on the mosque's front door and walls.

The police stated that the incendiary device failed to ignite. Chief Investigator Hutchinson remarked, "This incident is being treated as a hate crime, and I want to send a strong message to those who carried out this attack that such behavior will not be tolerated, and all hate crime reports are taken very seriously."
