A fire broke out on Thursday aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, while the vessel was operating in the Red Sea.
According to a statement, the fire originated in the ship’s main laundry spaces and was not related to combat operations. The incident was quickly contained by the crew.
Officials confirmed that the ship’s propulsion plant was not affected and that the aircraft carrier remains fully operational following the incident.
Two sailors sustained injuries during the event and are currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities said the injuries are non-life-threatening and both sailors are in stable condition.
The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group is currently deployed in the Red Sea as part of Operation Epic Fury, a mission focused on supporting regional security operations.
