A massive fire has destroyed around 200 homes and displaced hundreds of residents in Sabah, Malaysia, according to official reports.

Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama said the blaze broke out early Sunday in a coastal village in the Sandakan district, with emergency services alerted shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Fire officials reported that strong winds and the close proximity of wooden homes accelerated the spread of the flames. Low tide conditions also hampered access to open water sources, complicating firefighting efforts.

The affected area consists of traditional stilt houses built over water, often home to low-income communities, including stateless residents and indigenous groups.

Preliminary figures indicate that around 445 people have been displaced and relocated to temporary relief centers in Sandakan.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the federal government is coordinating with local authorities to provide emergency shelter and essential assistance.

Authorities have prioritized the safety of residents as relief operations continue, with efforts focused on delivering immediate aid and stabilizing conditions for those affected.
