A large fire erupted at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery near Los Angeles, California, on Thursday evening local time, prompting an emergency response from police and firefighters.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the cause of the blaze remains unclear. Local broadcaster CBS reported that authorities rushed to the site following reports of a possible explosion at the facility, one of the largest oil refineries on the US West Coast.
The El Segundo Police Department has confirmed that no injuries or immediate evacuations have been reported to date.
Emergency crews worked overnight to contain the flames as investigations into the incident began.
Chevron’s El Segundo refinery processes hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil daily, making it a critical hub for California’s fuel supply. Any disruption at the facility raises concerns about potential impacts on fuel production and energy markets in the region.
The fire comes amid heightened scrutiny of US energy infrastructure, as refineries and fuel plants face increasing safety and operational challenges.
