A fire broke out Monday evening at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, injuring six people and prompting the temporary suspension of flight operations, airport authorities said.

In a statement, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said the blaze appeared to have originated in a server room on the first floor of Terminal 1.

The incident left three women and three men injured, all of whom were reported to be in stable condition. One individual remains under further medical evaluation.

Authorities confirmed that 14 people were trapped inside the airport’s control tower during the incident but were successfully rescued and evacuated by emergency response teams, including firefighters and security personnel who remain deployed at the scene.

The fire caused damage to the departure hall, which had been undergoing renovations as part of a major infrastructure upgrade project valued at approximately 712 billion naira (around $530 million).

FAAN stated that the situation is now largely under control, with monitoring operations ongoing to prevent any resurgence.

Airspace operations were temporarily suspended in line with safety protocols. The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is working to establish a temporary control tower to facilitate the swift resumption of normal flight activities.
