Outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron topped the results of the first round of the presidential elections that took place yesterday (Sunday), with 27.85 percent of the vote, ahead of far-right candidate Marine Le Pen (23.15 percent).
The two leading hopefuls are going to re-run in the second round on April 24.
However, the candidate of the left-wing Radical Jean-Luc Melenchon came out of the race after obtaining 21.95 percent, according to the final results issued by the Ministry of the Interior, which was reported by Agence France-Presse( AFP).
The boycott rate reached 26.31 percent of registered voters, the highest level for a first-round presidential election after the 28.4 percent recorded in 2002.
Macron and Le Pen started on Monday a frantic campaign to persuade voters who are not enthusiastic about this confrontation and whose responses are unpredictable.
Opinion polls expect incumbent President Emmanuel Macron to win by a much smaller margin than the difference between him and Le Pen in the 2017 elections.
