FIFA is close to approving the playing of domestic league matches abroad, a departure from previous regulations that prohibited national leagues from playing any matches outside their home countries.
The Guardian newspaper confirmed that FIFA is expected to issue an approval allowing leagues to play one match abroad per season.
The report added that FIFA is currently working on a new protocol that would allow each league to move one match abroad. This protocol requires the approval of the national and continental federations of both the host and host countries before the request is submitted to FIFA. The aim is to establish strict controls to ensure player protection and revenue redistribution, thereby promoting international matches and benefiting commercial markets, particularly in North America and the Middle East.
