The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on Friday that it had foiled a potential attack inspired by the extremist group ISIS, which was planned to coincide with New Year’s Eve celebrations in the state of North Carolina.

In a statement, the FBI said its investigations uncovered indications of a planned attack directed by ISIS, adding that security agencies intervened in a timely manner to prevent the incident from taking place.

The FBI noted that security alert levels were immediately raised after authorities detected signs of a possible threat. Preventive security measures were implemented in close coordination with local law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety during New Year’s Eve events.

No details were released regarding the nature of the planned attack or the specific targets, as investigations remain ongoing.

The bureau said it is continuing to investigate the case to identify all individuals involved and to determine whether there were additional accomplices or linked cells, either within North Carolina or elsewhere.

The FBI stressed that the disruption of the suspected plot comes as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts, reaffirming its commitment to proactively identifying threats and safeguarding public security.

U.S. authorities have maintained heightened vigilance around major public events, particularly during holiday periods, amid persistent concerns over lone-actor and extremist-inspired attacks.
