A 14-year-old boy was killed and four others injured in a random stabbing attack in the Austrian city of Villach, located 350 kilometers south of Vienna, police confirmed on Saturday.
According to police spokesman Rainer Dionisio, a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker carried out the attack, randomly stabbing pedestrians in the street. Authorities stated that it remains unclear whether the suspect had any connection to the victims. The injured individuals range in age from 14 to 32 years old.
The suspect, who holds a residency permit in Austria, was apprehended shortly after the attack. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
Austria and Germany on High Alert Following Attacks
The stabbing incident comes just two days after a vehicular attack in Munich, Germany, where an Afghan asylum seeker intentionally ran over pedestrians.
On Saturday, German authorities confirmed that a two-year-old child and her 37-year-old mother succumbed to their injuries from the Munich attack, which also left 37 others injured. The 24-year-old Afghan suspect was arrested, with police stating he acted out of "extremist motives."
Authorities in both Austria and Germany are increasing security measures as investigations into these violent incidents continue.
