The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) reaffirmed their critical and complementary roles in strengthening food security, building resilient food systems and advancing climate adaptation in Egypt.
With the country facing increasingly complex socio-economic challenges, the three Rome‑Based Agencies emphasized the need for deeper coordination and convergence of their efforts.
Recent joint discussions have focused on aligning policy and advocacy with the Government of Egypt’s national development priorities, the UN Country Team’s areas of intervention, and follow‑up actions stemming from UN Food Systems Summit+4 and the Government’s 2025 convergence workshop.
Programmatically, the agencies are building on ongoing collaborations, geographical and institutional mapping, standardized implementation and monitoring tools, and lessons learned from previous joint initiatives, while exploring new opportunities for synergy. They also identified South‑South Cooperation, innovation support, joint resource mobilization and climate‑finance opportunities as key areas for enhanced partnership. Together, these priorities lay the groundwork for a more unified, effective and impactful collaboration among FAO, IFAD and WFP in Egypt.
“This workshop helps us to understand our individual and joint comparative advantage as the Food and Agriculture Based agencies, identify potential areas for collaboration and joint programming and align our efforts for both policy and programme support to the Government of Egypt,” said AbdulHakim El Waer, FAO Regional Representative for Near East and North Africa.
“Egypt has demonstrated strong leadership in advancing food security and sustainable development, and the Rome-based agencies are proud to support these efforts through a truly complementary approach. IFAD’s investment model in rural transformation, FAO’s technical and policy expertise, and WFP’s operational readiness and rapid response capacity together offer a powerful platform to deliver results at scale. By aligning our strengths with Egypt’s national priorities, we can strengthen food systems, expand economic opportunities in rural areas, and contribute to long-term stability and resilience,” stated Vrej Jijyan, Head of IFAD’s Multi-Country Office in Cairo
“At a time of growing socio-economic and climate pressures, no single institution can deliver food security alone. We, as WFP, are pleased to be working hand in hand with our sister agencies, FAO and IFAD, to deepen coordination and align our collective efforts with the Government of Egypt’s national priorities. Efficiency, optimization, and sustainability are at the core of our partnership, allowing us to deliver assistance, and align our efforts with the Government of Egypt’s priorities, ensuring smarter investments that protect the most vulnerable, and driving lasting transformations for food security.” – said WFP Representative and Country Director in Egypt, Rawad Halabi.
