The humanitarian situation in Sudan has become increasingly complex, particularly in areas besieged by ongoing fighting, amid a worsening food insecurity crisis and the erosion of basic livelihoods, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

Hongjie Yang, FAO Representative in Sudan, said millions of Sudanese families are facing daily challenges in accessing food and income, underscoring the need for urgent yet sustainable interventions to address the deepening crisis.

Speaking to Alqahera News Channel, Yang explained that FAO has recently signed a joint project with the Government of Poland valued at $1 million to provide an emergency response to food insecurity in Sudan. He expressed appreciation to the Polish government for what he described as timely and critical support amid the country’s difficult circumstances.

Yang noted that the project aims to ease the severity of the crisis and help Sudanese families withstand the economic and humanitarian impacts of the war.

According to the FAO representative, the initiative will target around 1,500 vulnerable and conflict-affected households—approximately 7,500 people—in the northern states of Sudan through a comprehensive package of interventions. These include direct support to the livestock sector, alongside capacity-building and training programs designed to help beneficiary families secure sustainable sources of income.

He stressed that empowering local communities remains a cornerstone of FAO’s humanitarian response plans in Sudan, emphasizing that building resilience is essential to enabling families to cope with and recover from the ongoing crisis.
