Global food prices climbed for the second consecutive month in March, driven primarily by rising energy costs linked to escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to a new report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The FAO’s latest benchmark index, which tracks monthly changes in a basket of internationally traded food commodities, showed a 1% increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting how geopolitical tensions are pushing production and transportation costs higher and adding new pressure on global food markets. Prices also rose 2.4% compared with February, according to the report cited by the Associated Press.

David Laborde, Director of Food and Agricultural Economics at FAO, noted that the recent price increases were relatively moderate compared to the surge following the Ukraine war in 2022, as global markets still benefit from abundant harvests in major agricultural regions.

Laborde emphasized that a significant share of the world’s fuel and agricultural fertilizers passes through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any prolonged closure would force farmers to make difficult decisions regarding crop production. Such disruptions could drive up production costs for upcoming harvests and potentially reduce output.
