Leading social media network Facebook removed thousands of pages that stream and post wrong information about COVID-19 vaccines, Reuters reported on Thursday.

This step came after the White House called social media platforms to control posts that linked to COVID-19, especially, those that hint misinformation about the vaccines and the process of the vaccination.

According to a newly issued report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), at least 12 accounts were shut down due to posting the majority of anti-vaccination misinformation online.

Although the social network denied the process of calculating the primary accounts that spread vaccine misinformation, the platform revealed that it removed dozens of pages, and groups on Facebook, and Instagram that linked to those 12 people for violating Facebook policies.

In a blog-post posted by the platform, it mentioned: "We have also imposed penalties on nearly two dozen additional Pages, groups or accounts linked to these 12 people."

Last week, Facebook shut down, on Tuesday, a disinformation operation which sought to spread Covid-19 vaccine hoaxes by duping social media influencers into backing false claims.

Facebook said it has removed hundreds of accounts linked to a mysterious advertising agency operating out of Russia that sought to pay social media influencers to smear COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and AstraZeneca. The leading social network labeled the operation a “disinformation laundromat”.

A network of 65 Facebook accounts and 243 Instagram accounts was traced back to Fazze, an advertising and marketing firm working on behalf of an unknown client.
