Facebook Classifies Myanmar as High Risk Location

Facebook Classified Myanmar a temporary high-risk location after a coup earlier this week, noting that it will remove any calls to bring armaments and protect posts criticizing the country’s military, according to The Verge report, on Wednesday.

Earlier, Myanmar’s new military government has ordered local telecom firms to temporarily block Facebook until February 7 midnight.

On Monday, the military took control of the country and declared a state of emergency for a year after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders of her ruling National League for Democracy.

“We are closely monitoring political events in Myanmar as they unfold and are taking additional steps to stop misinformation and content that could incite further tensions at this time,” facebook spokesperson said. “This includes removing misinformation that delegitimizes the outcome of November’s election,” as well as, hate speech and other misinformation.

According to BuzzFeed News , the firm executives have now pledged to take proactive content moderation steps in Myanmar, which they termed as “Temporary High-Risk Location.”
