Facebook announced on Saturday blocking the new events on its platform that take place close to locations including the White house, US Capitol and state capitol buildings through Joe Biden Inauguration Day, according to CNBC news.
In addition, Facebook reported its operations center will conduct a secondary review of all platform events tied to the inauguration, and remove anything that violates its policies. It's also continuing to block the creation of US events by non-US-based accounts and Pages.
Also, the firm is restricting some features for US-based users who have repeatedly violated Facebook's policies, including blocking them from creating live videos or an event, Group or Page.
The firm noted that the measure is designed to prevent people from using the platform to incite violence.
Following the Jan. 6 capitol storming, social media companies including Facebook and Twitter faced pressure to suspend the president's accounts after he used social media to push false claims of election fraud, which many say incited the violence. Twitter permanently banned Trump, and Facebook blocked him indefinitely.
Noteworthy, past week, supporters of Donald Trump stormed a congressional session held to endorse Joe Biden’s victory, as a last-minute desperate attempt by Trump to reverse his election loss led to chaos and accusations of an attempted “coup.”
Officials at the U.S. Capitol building announced the closure, and lawmakers said on Twitter that they were sheltering in their offices, as protesters – some of them carrying Trump flags – were seen walking through the building.
