Explosions were reported early Monday in the Diplomatic Quarter of Riyadh, according to AFP and regional media.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said the U.S. Embassy in the capital was targeted by two drones, causing a limited fire and minor material damage. The ministry added that the fire was contained and no casualties were reported.
U.S. media outlets later reported that the embassy building was unoccupied at the time of the attack, indicating that no personnel were inside when the drones struck.
In Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would respond “soon” to the attack on its diplomatic mission in Riyadh, without providing further details.
The Saudi Defense Ministry also announced that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed eight additional drones near Riyadh and the city of Al-Kharj, suggesting a wider attempted aerial assault.
The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh subsequently announced a temporary closure following what it described as an Iranian attack at dawn. There was no immediate comment from Iranian officials on the allegation.
Saudi authorities said security measures had been intensified as investigations into the incident continue.
