Statistics that rely on government reports show that the disease has accelerated further in the Americas, which account for more than half of the cases and half of deaths worldwide.

The tests showed that more than two million people were infected in Brazil, including President Jair Bolsonaro, in addition to more than 76,000 deaths.

India, the only other country with more than a million cases, has seen an average of 30,000 new cases per day during the past week.
