In his exclusive commentary for TV BRICS, Zamokuhle Mbandlwa, Professor at the Durban University of Technology and member of the BRICS Research Institute, emphasised that South Africa’s presidency of the G20 should be understood not as a national milestone but as an achievement for the entire African continent, according to TV BRICS.

He noted that Pretoria’s chosen agenda – centred on solidarity, equality and sustainability – reflects issues that resonate far beyond South Africa’s borders.

According to Professor Mbandlwa, the principle of solidarity is fundamental at a time when global issues demand coordinated responses. On equality, he highlighted the importance of ensuring that all individuals receive fair treatment and equitable opportunities. This, he said, forms the foundation for inclusive growth within Africa and across the G20.

Sustainability, the third pillar of the presidency, was described as a commitment to aligning today’s decisions with tomorrow’s needs. Professor Mbandlwa underlined that the continent seeks to preserve and expand current gains, ensuring that policy choices contribute positively to long-term development.

Looking ahead, he stressed the need for Africa to move from being primarily a consumer of global commodities to becoming a producer with meaningful input into global value chains. By strengthening its industrial capacity – from automotive and electronics manufacturing to other high-value sectors – Africa aims to secure a stronger and more balanced role in the world economy.
