The White House revealed on Friday that the U.S. has offered to help Egypt in its constant efforts to free a massive cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal.
“We are tracking the situation very closely,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters, affirming that the blockage appears to be taking a toll on energy markets.
“As part of our active diplomatic dialogue with Egypt, we’ve offered U.S. assistance to Egyptian authorities to help reopen the canal,” Psaki added.
The secretary asserted that they are consulting with their Egyptian partners about possible ways to support their efforts, noting that the conversations are ongoing and hopefully they will reveal more about the matter soon.
On Tuesday, the Ever Given, one of the world’s largest shipping vessels, has blocked all traffic along the critical trade route.
In the same page, the US Navy in the Middle East has set plans to send an assessment team of dredging experts to the Suez Canal as soon as Saturday, attempting to free the container ship, according to two defense officials.
Accordingly, the Egyptian government agreed to accept the offer of help relayed through the US Embassy in Cairo.
"The Biden administration is tracking the situation closely. As part of our active dialogue with Egypt, we have offered US assistance to Egyptian authorities to help re-open the canal,” a US official told CNN. “We are consulting with our Egyptian partners about how we can best support their efforts."
