On Tuesday, March 4, President of the European Council, António Costa, will represent the European Union at the emergency summit of Arab League in Cairo.
The summit will focus on the safe return of Palestinian civilians, the reconstruction of Gaza, and future governance amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
Costa will use this platform to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to a lasting peace based on the two-state solution, in line with UN resolutions.
He is also set to hold bilateral meetings with regional leaders to discuss further cooperation.
Ahead of his visit, Costa emphasized the EU’s role in post-conflict recovery, stating, “I am traveling to Cairo to emphasize that the EU will be present on the ‘day after’ to work with partners on a lasting and sustainable peace based on the two-state solution. We will support early recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza as an essential part of the future Palestinian state, in line with UN resolutions and international law.”
