The European Parliament has issued one of its strongest statements yet on the Gaza war, passing a resolution condemning what it described as a “humanitarian catastrophe” in the Palestinian enclave and holding Israel responsible for blocking the entry of vital aid.
The resolution, adopted with 305 votes in favor and 151 against, calls for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted access for humanitarian assistance.
Support for Suspending Israel Trade Agreement
According to Spain’s La Vanguardia, lawmakers voiced support for the European Commission’s proposal to partially suspend the EU-Israel trade partnership agreement — a move that will still require approval from EU member states.
The resolution also urged:
An end to arms exports to Israel.
Sanctions against extremist settlers and senior Israeli ministers including Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir.
Renewed funding for UNRWA (the UN Relief and Works Agency).
Backing for the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on war crimes charges.
EU Moves from Words to Actions
The European Union has already announced the suspension of its trade deal with Israel and sanctions against two ministers in Netanyahu’s government. Spain has led calls within the EU for tougher measures, pressing for a stronger response to what it calls Israeli war crimes.
At the UN, officials compared Israel’s actions to Holocaust-era massacres, warning that Palestinians who remain in Gaza face “the risk of extermination under occupation.”
Israel has also been accused of bombing churches and refugee centers, while continuing to block food aid, leading to starvation-related deaths.
France to Recognize Palestine
French President Emmanuel Macron said Israel is “destroying its credibility completely” through its military campaign, which has killed thousands of civilians. Macron confirmed that France will recognize the State of Palestine later this month, calling the move “the best way to isolate Hamas and open the path toward a comprehensive political solution.”
