European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has voiced her support for the European Union to establish a security and defense alliance that would work alongside NATO.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Metsola emphasized that the EU must always strive for greater strength, stating that the union should focus on building its capabilities rather than solely depending on external support.

Metsola highlighted the longstanding push within the EU for a dedicated security and defense union, a vision that aims to complement NATO’s objectives while bolstering the EU’s independent capabilities.

According to Metsola, this potential alliance would allow Europe to enhance its self-defense measures and further unify its approach to security across the continent.

Commenting on the upcoming US elections, Metsola noted that the EU has consistently partnered with the United States.

However, she emphasized the need for Europe to prepare for any outcome and expressed hope that strong collaboration with the US would continue, irrespective of political changes across the Atlantic.

The idea of a European defense initiative is not new. In April, French President Emmanuel Macron called for discussions on Europe’s defense future, including the sensitive topic of nuclear armament.

Macron underscored that France’s defense doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons in cases where national interests are severely threatened, reflecting the importance France places on strategic autonomy within the broader European framework.
