In a joint statement issued on April 8, 2026, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, German President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and Portuguese President of the European Council António Costa formally welcomed the two-week ceasefire concluded between the United States and Iran today.

The leaders expressed their gratitude to Pakistan and all partners involved for facilitating this important agreement, emphasizing that the primary goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days through diplomatic means.

The statement strongly encouraged quick progress toward a substantive negotiated settlement, describing it as crucial for protecting the civilian population of Iran and ensuring security in the region.

Furthermore, the leaders noted that such a settlement can avert a severe global energy crisis.

While confirming they are in close contact with the United States and other partners to support these diplomatic efforts, the European governments called upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon.

Additionally, the governments pledged to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
