Tunisia’s Electricity Company has joined hands with the Italian electrical operator "Terna" to secure a grant agreement worth €307 million from the European Commission.
This funding will support the implementation of an ambitious electrical interconnection project linking Tunisia and Italy.
Hisham Anan, the CEO of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company, emphasized the strategic significance of this agreement as he signed the accord.
He stated that this agreement marks a crucial step in activating a tangible energy bridge between Europe and North Africa.
A statement issued by the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company highlights the groundbreaking nature of this initiative.
For the first time, funds from the "European Connectivity Facility" are being allocated to an infrastructure project involving both a European Union member state and a third country.
Recognizing its importance, the European Commission has dedicated over half of the available budget within the framework of the 2022 call for proposals to support this project.
The electrical interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy encompasses a submarine cable with a capacity of 600 megawatts.
This cable will link the Tunisian electrical grid located in Menzel Temime, Nabeul, to the Italian grid in Sicily, passing through a high-voltage transformation station and covering a maritime distance of 200 kilometers. Impressively, the cable will reach depths of up to 800 meters.
