The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has advised airlines to avoid flying over Venezuelan airspace, citing heightened security risks following a recent United States military operation in the region.
In a safety notice, the agency warned that the possible activation of air defense systems poses a high risk to civilian aircraft. The alert urges commercial carriers to reroute flights to minimize exposure to potential military activity and misidentification risks.
Aviation safety experts say such advisories are issued when geopolitical tensions raise the likelihood of airspace becoming unsafe for civil aviation, including the danger of radar misinterpretation, missile launches or electronic interference.
The recommendation adds to a growing list of airspace restrictions worldwide as airlines reassess routes amid rising global security concerns.
Carriers operating long-haul services between the Americas and other regions are expected to adjust flight paths in line with the guidance to ensure passenger and crew safety.
