A severe heatwave sweeping across Europe has claimed seven lives in France, as record-breaking temperatures continue to hit several Western European countries.
French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said at least seven deaths were linked directly or indirectly to the extreme heat, including five drowning incidents.
Temperatures have surged above 30 degrees Celsius in parts of France and the United Kingdom, setting new records for late May.
Authorities across Europe have introduced emergency measures, including restrictions on outdoor work in Italy, while beaches in France saw unusually large crowds amid the soaring temperatures.
France’s national weather agency said Monday recorded the hottest May day ever registered in the country.
Scientists say the heatwave has been intensified by climate change and unusually hot air moving north from Africa under a strong high-pressure system.
