EU Warns of Potential Refugee Surge After Iran Strikes

European Union officials are raising concerns that the ongoing US-Israel military operation against Iran could trigger a new wave of refugees heading toward Europe, potentially testing the bloc’s migration system.

According to a report by Politico, some EU leaders fear that a large influx of displaced people could challenge the implementation of the bloc’s new migration framework.

The EU experienced a major refugee crisis in 2015–2016, when hundreds of thousands of migrants, many fleeing the war in Syria, arrived in Europe. Border states including Greece, Italy and Hungary struggled to manage the surge, sparking political tensions within the European Union.

After years of negotiations, the EU approved the Migration and Asylum Pact in 2024, which is scheduled to take effect in June.

Nicholas Ioannides warned that the EU cannot ignore the possibility of another refugee crisis triggered by instability in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Johan Forssell said Europe must avoid repeating the challenges seen during the previous migration wave, noting that many countries are still dealing with its long-term effects.

However, Fernando Grande-Marlaska argued that Europe managed the earlier crisis and could handle new arrivals if necessary.

So far, the International Organization for Migration said there has been no immediate increase in migration flows toward Europe.

At the same time, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that the conflict has already displaced about 3.2 million people inside Iran.

Earlier warnings from the European Union Agency for Asylum indicated that even partial destabilization in Iran could lead to unprecedented refugee movements toward Europe.
