The European Department of Foreign Affairs (EAS) confirmed that Turkey again blocked a European inspection of two commercial ships carrying the Turkish flag. The ship was suspected of transporting weapons to Libya, despite the arms embargo imposed by the UN.

The German News Agency (DPA) reported that the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February prevented the search of two cargo vessels suspected of transporting weapons to Libya.

In a previous incident in November, Turkey stopped an inspection of a container ship by the German Marines. Ankara accused the German government and the European Union of illegal behavior.

The Operation IRENI monitoring mission was established in May 2020 and aims to stabilize Libya and support the political peace process led by the United Nations.

Turkey supports the outgoing government of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.
