EU to Cut UNRWA Budget by 40%

The European Union decided to cut its budget to the UNRWA by 40% lower than its budget three-year period, the EU announced.

The new EU budget bill for the organziation will only $82 million per-year, compared to $135 million in the previous years, according to the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education.

Extra $15 million will be provided by the EU's Food and Resilience Facility for 2022 to support food security in the light of the Ukraine Crisis.

Last month, the Arab Parliament (AP) decried Israel’s plots aiming to dissolve the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In a statement, the parliament stressed its rejection to touch UNRWA’s responsibility towards Palestinian people, calling for finding a fair solution to the Palestinian refugees, in accordance with the international legitimacy’s resolutions.

It reiterated its full support for the agency to continue providing basic services to the Palestinian refugees, accordance to the statement.

The parliament pointed to the significance of offering support to the UNRWA especially in light of the financial crisis it facing due to the Covid-19 repercussions.

It further called on the international community to assume its responsibility towards the Palestinian refugees by offering funding and assistance to help the agency keep on its action towards the Palestinians.
