European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will allocate 1 billion euros to Turkiye and more than 100 million euros to Syria for post-earthquake reconstruction.
"I am pleased to announce that the European Commission alone will support Turkiye with 1 billion euros ($1.07 billion) for the post-earthquake reconstruction, we also pledge a further package of 108 million euros for humanitarian assistance and early recovery in Syria," von der Leyen said during an opening speech at the International Donors' Conference Together for the people in Turkey and Syria.
According to the European Commission leader, EU countries, as well as European financial institutions, intend to make separate donations.
The February 6 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 and aftershocks in southern Turkiye and northwestern Syria killed more than 50,000 people in the two nations, including over 6,000 in Syria, in addition to the great damage left by the earthquake.
