The European Union is preparing for a prolonged period of strategic tension as the war in Ukraine continues, with military leaders signaling a long-term effort to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities.

Belgian Chief of Defense Frederik Vansina indicated that Europe is using the ongoing conflict to gain time to reinforce its military readiness, with a strategic outlook extending toward 2030.

He stressed that Russia does not pose an immediate threat of attack on Europe, but warned that the continent must be prepared for future challenges. Vansina called for increased defense spending and a coordinated expansion of European military capabilities.

The remarks reflect growing concern within the EU over long-term reliance on the US for security, as policymakers push to enhance strategic autonomy and reduce dependency on American military support.

Vansina also emphasized the importance of maintaining existing NATO command structures rather than creating new ones, ensuring operational continuity even if US involvement in Europe changes.

Meanwhile, Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have reiterated that Russia has no intention of attacking European countries, rejecting such claims outright.
