The European Union (EU) on Tuesday regretted Kosovo's decision to open its embassy in Jerusalem in March, an action that is contrary to the bloc's stance on the status on that city.
A spokesman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell recalled that all diplomatic missions of the EU countries and the EU Embassy in Israel are in Tel Aviv.
He stressed that the EU's position on Jerusalem is that it should be the shared capital of Palestine and Israel.
The EU criticized the decision after Kosovo's foreign minister, Meliza Haradinaj-Stublla, held a virtual talk with her Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi, in which they agreed to open the embassy.
Such a position removes the possibility that Kosovo joins the regional bloc, an option identified by that country as a strategic priority.
Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia do not recognize Kosovo's independence, proclaimed in 2008.
The Palestinian National Authority demands to establish an independent State with pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
